Tone, Phrasing Matter When Discussing Vaccination Status

How to ask someone if they're vaccinated doesn't have to be awkward

Now that things are starting to feel normal again, complete with in-person, mask-free hangouts, many of us have a big question when we encounter someone we’ve never met, or haven’t seen in a while: Are they vaccinated? That question is a valid one, especially because about a third of the country still hasn’t received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. 

But how can you actually go about asking this tough question?

“Asking someone about their vaccination status is valid because vaccination is one of the critical steps in protecting ourselves and our communities from the continued spread of COVID-19,” said Sarah Harte, LICSW and director at The Dorm, which provides mental health and other therapies geared to young adults. “However, the way you go about asking about vaccination status depends on your relationship and the context you are in.”
