School Bus Group Launches Campaign to Recruit Drivers

The national worker shortage is hitting many sectors quite hard

The national shortage of workers is exacerbated in certain sectors that have long-time challenges in recruiting staff, like the school bus industry. The problem predates COVID-19, but the pandemic made it worse, said Ryan Dellinger, executive director of the Pennsylvania School Bus Association (PSBA).

“We are, by no means, a stranger to the shortage issue that everyone’s facing right now,” he said.

Across Pennsylvania, 88 percent of K-12 students from urban, rural, and suburban communities begin and end their day on the school bus. The shortage of drivers jeopardizes Pennsylvania’s ability to get 1.5 million students back and forth safely to school, sporting events, and activities.
