Health Officials Warn of ‘Perilous Situation’ as Respiratory Virus Cases Rise in Children

This comes amid a national rise in cases of children testing positive for COVID-19

Today, officials with the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) expressed concern over an "unexpected" rise of respiratory illnesses reported in children amid a continued surge in COVID-19 cases statewide.

During the briefing, Nationwide Children's Hospital Chief Medical Officer Rustin Morse, alongside Chief Nursing Officer Lee Ann Wallace, discussed a rise in Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV; a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms.

According to ODH Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, more children are being hospitalized with an "unexpected summer surge" of respiratory illnesses.
