FDA Advisory Panel Meets on Moderna Booster Shots

President Biden to address public

This morning, President Joe Biden is set to brief the public Thursday morning about the government’s coronavirus response as an independent advisory panel meets to discuss whether a booster of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine is safe and effective.

Biden and Vice President Harris will also get an update on the vaccination program from members of the expert group tasked with advising the White House on its response to the coronavirus pandemic, as political fights escalate with Republicans over the administration’s efforts to get companies and contractors to mandate vaccinations for their employees.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel is hearing from Moderna, which has requested authorization of a half-dose of its vaccine for people 65 and older, as well as for younger adults who are at high risk of severe illness due to underlying conditions or who are exposed to the virus through their work. The company presented data to the FDA showing that a booster dose restored levels of virus-fighting antibodies that had dropped in the six months since initial vaccination.
