President Biden, Senator Brown Announce $1.6 Billion Improvements for Brent Spence Bridge

Funding will also be used to improve the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor

Yesterday, President Joe Biden and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) joined state and federal officials at the Brent Spence Bridge to announce that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded $1.635 billion to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) to construct a new companion bridge to the Brent Spence Bridge. Funding will also be used to make significant improvements to the eight-mile Brent Spence Bridge Corridor, which runs from the Western Hills Viaduct in Ohio to the Dixie Highway in Kentucky.

"Whether it's a safer commute to work, or businesses safely and affordably transporting their products, this bridge will make life better for people in Ohio and Kentucky," Brown said during his remarks. "Today shows just what we can achieve for the region and for the country when everyone works together."

A majority of the funding announced today, $1.385 billion was made possible by Brown's Bridge Investment Act. Brown first introduced the Bridge Investment Act in 2018, and it was included in the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which Brown helped write and pass. The $1.385 billion will be distributed under a multi-year grant agreement with ODOT and KYTC, a new funding mechanism created by Brown's legislation to assist large bridge projects.
