Tornadoes Kill 26 Across Mississippi, Alabama

States of emergency were issued

On Friday night, devastating tornadoes swept through Mississippi and northern Alabama, killing at least 26 people, injuring dozens more and causing severe damage. Wind gusts of up to 80 mph and hail the size of golf balls battered the state as the large twisters moved more than 100 miles, an unusually long path.

They left behind destruction, reducing buildings to piles of wreckage in hard-hit areas. Two top Biden administration officials, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell, will visit a state on Sunday still recovering from the devastating tornadoes. More storms are expected Sunday night.

Earlier on Saturday, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) declared a state of emergency and spoke with President Joe Biden. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) confirmed the latest death toll Saturday afternoon and said it had found the four people who previously were missing. With dozens more still injured, the death toll could rise.
