India Train Crash Toll Passes 280

The rescue operation has ended

On Saturday, Indian authorities ended an intensive search for survivors of a three-train pileup the night before in the country's east, as the death toll rose to 288, making it one of the worst railway accidents in India's history.

Approximately 1,000 people were injured in the collision Friday night in the state of Odisha, the government said in a preliminary incident report obtained by The Washington Post. Rescue operations were "completed" Saturday afternoon local time, India’s Railways Ministry said on Twitter, adding that "restoration work" was underway.

The crash involved high-speed trains that collided "head-on" Odisha's director of fire and emergency services, Sudhanshu Sarangi, said, calling it "a major, major tragedy."
