Ohio Senator Issues Warning to Education Officials
His remark was "support the Senate plan... it only could get worse"
Ohio Sen. Jerry Cirino, the powerful Republican who chairs the state Senate's budget committee, struck a perfectly friendly tone when he asked two women representing the Ohio Association of School Business Officials (OASBO) which version of the state budget was best for public education: Gov. Mike DeWine's, the House's or the Senate's.
The Lake County Republican was satisfied when one replied that she thought the Senate plan was best. But what he said next may create a chilling effect for those in public education seeking more money in these final weeks of the budget-making process.
"I would suggest, for your members and for the two of you, that you do everything you can to support the Senate plan, because as we go into conference, there's going to be other competing viewpoints on how to do this, and it only could get worse for you," he said. "So, I suggest that you support the Senate plan."
