Apple’s Next AirPods May Have Cameras

News,

Apple’s big fall hardware release is just around the corner, and we suspect one of the hottest new devices we will see are AirPods with built-in cameras. A rumor about this innovation has been circulating for months, but the volume on those rumors just turned way up: Tech site MacRumors dug into beta test code that Apple just released and found hard evidence that these new AirPods are on the way.

Because the cameras will be worn at ear height, they wll probably have roughly the same viewpoint as the person wearing them will have—perfect for a sort of real time “what am I looking at?” query. A video clip MacRumors found gives an excellent example of one use. It explains that with "Apple Intelligence your world becomes saveable" so you merely have to, for example, look at the cover of a book you find interesting and ask it to save the data for you for later access.

MacRumors says that the system is even smart enough to detect if a users' hair is obstructing the AirPod's lenses, and will alert users that to "get the most accurate information about things in your environment" they should ensure they're not covered in some way. According to an earlier leak from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, these devices will have a codename of B790 and will be released as soon as next month, during an event that will also include new iPhone 18 units and probably Apple’s first foldable screen device—the iPhone Ultra.
