As U.S. Heat Dome Peaks, See Where Millions Lack Air Conditioning

As temperatures soar to triple digits and record temperatures across a swath of the United States this week, a Washington Post analysis has found that about 3 million households in areas of major or extreme heat risk lack air conditioning.

About 93 percent of homes have air conditioning nationwide, as do 96 percent of households in the areas with high heat risk this week, according to The Post's analysis of data from the National Weather Service (NSW) and the Census Bureau.

But as the peaking heat dome sends temperatures and humidity skyrocketing in the Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast through this weekend, some vulnerable cities in at-risk areas have higher-than-average shares of homes without air conditioning.
