Congress Clears Short-term Funding Extension

On Sept. 1, 2026, the House voted 370-48 to approve a continuing resolution (CR) funding the federal government through Dec. 11, sending the measure to President Donald Trump for his signature. The Senate passed the legislation last month with broad bipartisan support.

The measure averts a potential government shutdown when current funding expires Sept. 30 and postpones further spending negotiations until after the midterm elections. Passage of a CR nearly a month before the deadline is unusual and reflects bipartisan interest in avoiding a politically contentious funding fight this fall.

Congress must now work to reach agreement on the 12 full-year appropriations bills before the CR expires.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) characterized the measure as a straightforward extension that preserves government services and provides additional time to complete the annual funding process. Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) similarly emphasized the need for bipartisan negotiations to enact full-year funding legislation by Dec. 11.
