How Steve Jobs Utilized the Rule of Three
Years ago, when I moved to Los Angeles to try my hand at screenwriting, I took classes at UCLA Extension. One of the first things they taught us was a principle, summarized in a quote, that has stuck with me ever since: “You have to learn the rules so that you know how to break them.”
It is true in screenwriting. It is true in business. As it turns out, it’s a pretty good framework for understanding Steve Jobs.
Now, as Apple reportedly prepares for its eighth CEO transition—with Tim Cook potentially stepping down and hardware chief John Ternus lined up to take over—it is worth looking back at what made Jobs such an effective leader.
