Judge Blocks Administration's Latest Attempt to Limit Birthright Citizenship

President Donald Trump’s latest attempt to limit birthright citizenship has been blocked by a federal judge.

U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman in Maryland said Sept. 2 that Trump's August executive order (EO) blocking birthright citizenship in certain cases is "almost certainly unconstitutional," citing a Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruling in June that reinforced the right to birthright citizenship for almost everyone born in the United States.

“This court must, once again, preliminarily enjoin enforcement of the president's most recent attempt to strip the right to citizenship," she wrote in a 35-page opinion accompanying the order. "The Supreme Court has spoken: Children in the certified class are 'citizens at birth.'"
