Major TV Networks Halt Presidential Video Coverage over CNN Ban

News organizations responded strenuously Monday to President Donald Trump’s decision to ban CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO from the White House, filing a First Amendment lawsuit in federal court and banding together to halt video coverage of the president until further notice.

In the suit filed in federal district court in Washington, CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO are alleging violations of news outlets’ First Amendment free press rights and due process under the Fifth Amendment. They are requesting that a federal judge hear the case on an expedited basis. The Constitution, the banned news outlets said in the suit, "does not allow a president or any other government official to deprive the press of their First Amendment rights and liberty and property interests with no notice or process based solely on his dislike of the content of their reporting."

Soon after the lawsuit was announced, ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC said they would halt TV coverage of presidential events, according to a memo obtained by The Washington Post, over the White House’s ban of CNN, which is one of the five members the White House television pool. The Post on Monday shared it will not publish any photographs of the day’s presidential events — including Trump’s departure from the White House and his events at the United Nations in New York — until midnight Eastern time, joining a collective effort with photographers in other newsrooms covering the White House in a show of support of the banned outlets.
