More Planes Get Emergency Auto-land Tech

In 1999, a Learjet 35 carrying professional golfer Payne Stewart and five others flew wildly off-course for nearly four hours before crashing into a field in South Dakota.

The plane — heading from Orlando to a golf tournament in Texas— failed to make radio contact or respond to the fighter jets scrambled to intercept it along its wayward course. A subsequent investigation found that a sudden, early loss of cabin pressure and oxygen had knocked out everyone onboard, including the two pilots.

With no one in control, the plane just flew and flew until it ran out of fuel.
