OpenAI Just Declared ChatGPT as You Know It Dead

On Wednesday, OpenAI shipped the biggest update in ChatGPT’s history—a new desktop app, a new agent called Work, a built-in browser, and a new family of models. It’s OpenAI’s take on a super-app, and it says everything about what the company thinks you should be doing with its AI products.

The ChatGPT app you have been using—the one that made OpenAI the fastest-growing consumer product in history—is now called ChatGPT Classic. The new app that replaces it isn't actually new at all. It is Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, renamed. Existing Codex users open the new app and land in Codex by default. They can even keep the Codex icon in their dock. But the app is now called ChatGPT, even though it differs from the previous app called ChatGPT.

There are a number of problems with that approach, especially for people who are used to using ChatGPT as a chatbot. In fact, the new app makes everything about the chatbot experience worse—if you can even figure out how to use it at all.
