Science Says the Most Productive People Don’t Actually Work That Hard

News,

Sometimes, I will take a task I know will take 10 or 12 hours and decide to finish it in one day, especially if the work involved isn't fun. In those situations, the one-day approach feels like the sudden pain of ripping off a Band-Aid versus the seemingly never-ending pain of peeling it off.

I also, sometimes, like working in shorter bursts, especially since research shows the average person (and I'm decidedly average) can only focus on any given task for 90 to 120 minutes. After that, most people need a 10- to 15-minute break to recharge and achieve high performance on their next task. (The Pomodoro Technique uses even shorter bursts: 25 minutes of work, five-minute break, 25 minutes of work… )

Both are great, once in a while.
