Scientists Warn Glucosamine May Accelerate Your Risk of Cognitive Decline

To alleviate joint pain, you may find yourself turning to medication or supplements. However, a new study just revealed that a popular compound may have some unwanted side effects.

Glucosamine, a widely used supplement, is often used for joint pain relief. However, researchers recently discovered that it also may lead to a faster progression of mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease.

The study, which was published in Nature Metabolism, found that glucosamine interacts with some biological processes in the brain that are already disrupted by Alzheimer's disease. The researchers noted users of the supplement had a 25 percent higher likelihood of developing cognitive diseases, including dementia.
