The Winter Season Has Officially Arrived

News,

Today marks the winter solstice and the official start of the winter season. The winter solstice occurs at 10:03 a.m. ET on Dec. 21, 2025.

This is the point in which the Northern Hemisphere is at its maximum tilt away from the sun, making it the day with the least amount of daylight for the year. Beginning Dec. 22, we will start to add more daylight.

For Columbus, daylight on the winter solstice is at 9 hours and 20 minutes. By Dec. 31, we are up to 9 hours and 23 minutes. A greater increase in overall daylight occurs in January; by the end of the month, we see 10 hours and 9 minutes of daylight.
