Two Cyclospora-related Deaths Reported in Michigan

Two people have died in connection with the cyclospora outbreak in Michigan, state health authorities announced Monday.

The people who died had "significant underlying health conditions" that may have been affected by the intestinal illness and dehydration, the state health department said, adding that no more information would be provided on the cases.

Deaths from the illness caused by the microscopic parasite are uncommon in the United States, and it is generally not life-threatening, according to Michigan's health department. The state has reported more than 11,200 cases and nearly 200 hospitalizations.
