What a Washington, D.C., Mansion Knows about Membership That We Do Not

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, observed each year from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, ASAE is highlighting the vital contributions and voices of the Hispanic and Latino communities within associations and beyond.

At dinner the other night, one friend could not stop talking about a club in Washington, D.C., had never even heard of: The House at 1229.

She had been a few times, always as someone's guest. The owner greeted her by name. Touched her arm. Walked her around the room introducing her to members like they had known each other for years. That is the whole business model, right there. Four seconds when someone made a stranger feel like she already belonged. That is worth more than the mansion, the supper clubs or the author talks.
