When Competence Becomes Camouflage

A chief executive, whom I will call Michael, answered his last email at 1:47 a.m.

At 6:30 the next morning, he sat at his kitchen table rereading the same paragraph of a board paper. Three times. The words were clear; the meaning would not hold.

By 8:00, he was chairing the meeting with his usual composure. The numbers were strong. His questions were precise. Nobody in the room would have described him as impaired.
