CDC Warns Travelers amid Outbreak of Mosquito-borne Virus in Five Countries
U.S. health officials are urging travelers to take extra precautious in five countries amid an outbreak of chikungunya, a virus that is transmitted by mosquito bites.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added three countries in February to its list of regions impacted by the mosquito-borne illness: Bolivia, Seychelles and Suriname.
A travel notice about the virus was issued in September for travelers to Cuba, and another was issued in Sri Lanka in December. All five active notices for the outbreak are categorized as "Level 2" on a scale of four. Travelers to the affected areas are encouraged to practice enhanced precautions.
