DHS Shutdown Stalemate Raises Potential Travel Concerns
Negotiations between the White House and congressional Democrats remain at an impasse over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), leaving a partial federal shutdown in place while lawmakers are currently away from Washington.
According to POLITICO, both sides remain engaged in discussions, but a near-term resolution appears unlikely.
"The administration remains interested in good faith conversations to end the Democrat shutdown before more Americans feel the impacts,” a White House official said to POLITICO Tuesday. "But the administration also remains committed to carrying out the president’s promise to enforce federal immigration law."
Many associations and other business leaders are monitoring the stalemate for potential travel disruptions. The shutdown affects DHS, meaning personnel at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are expected to continue working without pay. While air traffic controllers at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are funded, prolonged uncertainty could still strain airport operations and traveler experience.
The remainder of the federal government is funded until Sept. 30.
