Eight Habits of Great Conversationalists

When people talk about being "good at conversation," they often imagine something innate. They think of charisma, wit or the ability to hold court effortlessly. But after hundreds of lunches with strangers, I came to see conversation very differently. The best conversationalists I met were not necessarily the loudest, funniest or most assertive people in the room. In fact, many of them were quiet, understated and unassuming.

What set them apart wasn't personality, but habit. Strong communicators behaved consistently, from how they approached conversations to how they treated people. And because their behaviors were repeatable, they could be learned.

Here are some of the habits I have found to be common among those who are great conversationalists.
