Five years ago, this warehouse near Memphis was surrounded by forest. Then Elon Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) company xAI bought the site.

Today, it is home to the country's largest operating data center, Colossus 2. Its rooftops bear the words "Macrohard" and "Macroharder," a petty jab by Musk at Microsoft.

Across the United States, farmlands, forests and deserts are being cleared to make way for the physical infrastructure that powers our technology.
