King Charles Visits D.C. with Hopes of Restoring the U.K.-U.S. Relationship
King Charles III of England is embracing some of Washington, D.C.'s most formal ceremonial trappings as he tries to emphasize a bond between the United Kingdom and the United States that is so strong it can withstand the political turmoil of the moment.
The king's visit comes at a challenging moment for U.S.-UK relations. Trump’s up-and-down relationship with Prime Minister Keir Starmer has taken a particularly sour turn over the past several months as the president has sought to rally international support for the U.S./Israel war in Iran.
Charles, accompanied by Queen Camilla, began his day by meeting President Donald Trump at the White House. In the afternoon, the king addressed the U.S. Congress making him the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II, his mother, did so in 1991. The day ended with a dinner at the White House.
