SCOTUS Casts Doubt on Administration's Order on Birthright Citizenship
The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is casting doubt on President Donald Trump's bid to restrict birthright citizenship from children born to parents who are in the United States illegally or temporarily aren't American citizens. The birthright citizenship order, which Trump signed on Jan. 20, 2025, the first day of his second term, is part of his Republican administration's broad immigration crackdown.
The consequential case was magnified by Trump's unprecedented presence in the courtroom for the duration of his lawyer’s argument. A definitive ruling by SCOTUS is expected by early summer.
Arguing on behalf of the Trump administration, Solicitor General D. John Sauer faced skepticism from conservative and liberal justices alike. Lawyer Cecillia Wang found notably less resistance in her defense of the long-established legality of birthright citizenship.
