Some Ohioans Want to Ban Big Data Centers

A grassroots campaign to ban large data centers in Ohio cleared another hurdle Thursday after the Ohio Ballot Board voted unanimously to approve a proposed constitutional amendment as a single ballot issue, potentially placing the measure before voters this November.

The amendment, backed by the group Ohio Residents for Responsible Development, would prohibit large data centers that consume more than 25 megawatts of power per month from operating anywhere in the state.

Andrew Gula, a member of the committee behind the effort, argued that the issue crosses political and economic lines.
