The FCC Just Reversed Course on a Key Restriction

Good news for offices that depend on Wi-Fi for their day-to-day operations.

You may have missed it, but less than two months ago, the FCC made a major decision: It banned the sale of all new consumer-grade routers that were not made in the United States. Now, one of the most controversial parts of that new decision is being walked back; it could provide important protection for business owners (and consumers).

Initially, the FCC’s ban on new routers from other countries would have also prevented current owners of those brands from receiving software and security updates after 2027. That could have opened the floodgates for hackers to steal customer information and corporate data, or insert ransomware into critical systems. With the update, the agency acknowledged that preventing those updates could create cybersecurity risks.
