Update Your iPhone Now: Apple Just Fixed a Security Hole the FBI Exploited to Access Messages
Apple just released a new security patch that addresses an important privacy vulnerability. The problem, which this patch corrects, meant that "notifications marked for deletion could be unexpectedly retained on the device," according to a Wednesday announcement from Apple.
"A logging issue was addressed with improved data redaction," the update for iOS 26.4.2 and iPadOS 26.4.2 reads.
Although Apple's announcement did not explicitly address the motivation for the update or exactly what data would be redacted, it follows closely on the heels of a high-profile case in which the FBI accessed previews of messages stored in Apple's push notification database. The messages had been sent through encrypted app Signal, and the device's owner had used disappearing messages, as well as deleting the app. 404 Media first reported the story.
