U.S. Fighter Jet Crashes in Iran

News,

On Friday, a U.S. fighter jet crashed in southern Iran, prompting a frantic search and rescue operation and the recovery of one of the two downed crew members, U.S. officials said.

The condition of the rescued person was not immediately clear, and an intense effort was underway to recover the second crew member, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing operation.

Also unclear is whether the aircraft was brought down by enemy fire or if an accident or malfunction may have played a role. The crash is the first known instance of a manned American aircraft going down inside hostile territory in the month-long Iran conflict.
