Italian American Organizations File Lawsuit against City over Removal of Christopher Columbus Statue

News,

Several Italian American organizations filed a lawsuit against the City of Columbus on Tuesday, demanding that the Christopher Columbus statue, which was removed from Columbus City Hall in 2020, be restored to where it once stood.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Columbus, called the removal of the statue illegal and discriminatory. Among the groups filing the lawsuit includes the Columbus Piave Club and Friends of Christopher Columbus Foundation.

The Christopher Columbus statue was gifted to the city by the people of Genoa, Italy in 1955. Mayor Andrew Ginther ordered the statue to come down, saying at the time it did not represent the city’s values. Ginther cited concerns from Indigenous communities who viewed it as a symbol of violence and cultural loss. The statue has been sitting in an unknown storage location since its abrupt removal.
