This Workplace Expert Says the Best Leaders Stop Asking People to Follow Them
Workplace expert Linda Hill has spent years studying what separates organizations that innovate once from those that do it again and again. Her conclusion runs counter to one of leadership’s long-standing myths: that great leaders are defined by having a vision—and the people who follow it.
Instead of the traditional follower mindset, Hill argues that more effective leaders are moving toward co-creation. “It’s not about, ‘I have the vision, follow me to the future,’” she tells Inc. “It’s more about, ‘Let me create an environment in which we are going together—we’re going to co-create the future.”
In practice, that shift begins with looking inward first. Hill, who co-authored a recently published book titled Genius at Scale: How Great Leaders Drive Innovation, says co-creation begins with self-awareness. "It does start with looking at yourself and understanding you are an important role model for the rest of the organization."
