BWC Investigation Leads to Unraveling of $900,000 Fraud Scheme

News,

The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) special investigations, working alongside federal and local authorities, uncovered a scheme where Michael Honaker from Windham, Ohio, claimed physical and cognitive impairments to illegally receive BWC benefits, resulting in more than $900,000 in savings.

In 2015, BWC's Special Investigations Department (SID) received an allegation that Honaker was able to drive a car, a motorcycle and able to walk without crutches, while allegedly faking his physical and cognitive abilities during medical appointments.

"Our Special Investigations Department did an exceptional job uncovering and securing the conviction in this complex fraud scheme," said BWC Administrator/CEO Stephanie McCloud. "Their collaboration with local police and federal agencies was instrumental in saving money for the State Insurance Fund."
